AN EFFORT to combat vandalism by installing an electronically-operated roller shutter door at a Weymouth shop looks set to be blocked.
The owner of Weird Fish in St Mary Street has applied for planning permission for the security measure as six incidents of vandalism have occurred there recently resulting in the replacement of glass costing thousands of pounds.
Work began on installing the shutter before planning permission was sought, prompting Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to step in. Most of the shutter box is in place as is the roller, and the device is being used at night.
Councillors are being recommended to refuse planning permission because of the ‘detrimental’ impact of the shutter on the town centre.
