BRIDPORT town and county councillor Karl Wallace is set to seek the Prime Minister’s opinion on the way the future changes at the town’s Community Hospital have been dealt with.

Coun Wallace, told a full Dorset County Council meeting that the Health Scrutiny committee, which gave the green light to cuts to a number of services and clinics, had not followed government guidelines.

“None of the minutes of the Scrutiny Committee took into account what the government has set out in its criteria.

“This would reduce patient choice and not increase it and local GPs do not support it,” he added.

“I will be writing to David Cameron and asking him to review and comment on this.”

He also claimed that there had not been proper public consultation and that the changes were simply to save money.

Coun Wallace, pictured, said he wanted the issue looked at again and opened up for more serious discussion and debate.

County council leader Angus Campbell told Coun Wallace that his concerns had been noted.

After the meeting in Dorchester Coun Wallace said: “They’re sticking their heads in the sand hoping this will go away but it’s not going to.

“Another point I raised was that three out of six county councillors weren’t there and they did say they would have a reserve list so that there’s proper representation on it.”

Planned changes at the hospital include a reduction of 334 outpatient appointments relating to orthotics, consultant colorectal clinics and nurse-led irritable bowel syndrome clinics. Theatre usage will drop from three to two days a year with a review after a year.

Concerns have been raised about the availability of transport for patients having to be treated at more distant hospitals when the changes take place in July.

A spokesperson for Dorset County Council, said: “This matter was treated in the same way as any other within the Dorset Health Scrutiny committee and due process was followed.”
