A CONCERT, balloons and cake were the order of the day as Air Radio celebrated its first birthday.

Students from Westfield Arts College and St Andrew’s Primary School danced along to live musicians as part of the celebrations.

Local stalwarts of the music scene Danny Adams, Jess Upton, Steve Wilson and Robbie McIntosh entertained the schoolchildren.

Students celebrated with a birthday cake and balloons were festooned around the studio.

Just one year after the community radio station launched, it now has FM status and are looking to launch the station to the whole of Weymouth and Portland within the next year.

Station manager Carl Greenham said: “It’s about the community coming together. It’s a celebration of our first birthday. Over this year so much has happened.”

He added: “The most amazing thing is the FM status. It’s the icing on the cake of how far we have come in a year.”

Mr Greenham said that the students had grown in confidence in the year and it had been amazing to watch them grow.

He said: “The students have come such a long way. They have taken to it. They have become so confident.

“It’s been amazing watching them develop in confidence.”

He added that students were taking skills learned across the entire school curriculum and using them to create their shows and content for Air.

Air stands for All Inclusive Radio and Mr Greenham said the idea was to get as many schools, students and people in the community involved as possible.

Wey Valley School student Scott Williams, 14, was helping to present a show on Air.

He said: “It’s cool because we are able to do so much more here. We can speak to celebrities that we have never spoken to before.”
