I write regarding the letter (Echo, May 24) from the cyclist who experienced a near life-changing collision.

I write ‘near life-changing’ as a fellow cyclist who has had a motorist drive so close behind and sound their horn as they passed causing at best a missed heart beat and, fortunately, a near miss.

Certain motorists do not appreciate the dangers of tail-gating cyclists or sounding their horns – which seems to provide great amusement for the driver and occupants.

The cyclist then loses control and collides with a following vehicle, which may be a HGV or bus.

Fatal consequences can ensue.

The council is encouraging us all to cycle during the Olympics, so more cyclists are likely to be on the road.

If the local resident had been an international sailing athlete struck by a drinks can, who had then been seriously injured as a result, imagine how this would reflect on Weymouth. Yes, I wear a hi-vis jacket and have my cycle lights on at night – but is that just making me an easier target for the motorist who cannot bear to share the road?
