Many years ago I was booked for stopping my car on the zig-zags painted on the road by a pedestrian crossing in Dorchester.

I only stopped to let someone out of my car but a passing policeman explained to me very carefully and politely that no vehicle was allowed to stop on these markings as you would block the view of pedestrians using the crossing.

This is fine by me.

However the other day I caught a No 10 bus from Weymouth to Dorchester and alighted at the market stop right by Dukes Auctioneers. As I stepped off the bus which had correctly stopped at the stop I noticed something under my feet – zig-zags.

The bus pulled away and I could see that the bus stop itself is situated on the zig-zag markings.

Another bus pulled in and stopped with its door right by the stop and the whole of the bus covered the zig-zag markings back to the crossing and a bus blocks much more of a pedestrian’s view than did my car all those years ago. A policeman was nearby so I called him over and he was quite surprised and agreed with me that the buses should not stop on zigzags.

I asked him if he could fine every bus driver that pulled up there but he just gave a wry smile.

If I was fined for stopping on zigzags then surely these bus drivers should be fined. It could release an enormous amount of money, then perhaps could I get my money back?
