HUNDREDS came from far and wide to Weymouth harbourside where Morris dancing, music and plenty of folk fun awaited.

Children, adults and even pet dogs joined in the celebrations at the Wessex Folk Festival over the weekend.

The 10th annual concert saw more visitors than ever before.

Chairman of the organising committee Roger Quigley said: “It was absolutely brilliant. There haven’t been that many people round the harbourside for about 100 years. The weather held up for us, the acts were good – people came from all over the country.

“Local traders gave their support and we’re very pleased with what a success it was.

“It was a lovely, good-natured family event.

“It’s nice that after 10 years, the festival has become so popular and is so well supported by local traders and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

“We’re already looking forward to 2013.”

Shanties, Appalachian folk and foot-tapping jigs could be heard on the main stage in Hope Square and second stage along the harbourside.

Organising committee member Chris Preece said: “Sunday in particular was very crowded, with hundreds of people all down the harbourside.

“It brought in a lot of tourism and we’re already looking forward to next year.

“It takes a lot of organisation – we have to book the bands well in advance. There are lots of festivals now and we want to make sure they come to ours.”

The festival was rounded off with a performance by Stompin’ Dave at the Pavilion last night in aid of The Marine Society and MV Freedom.

Mr Quigley said: “A great time was had by all. We will soon be gathering to give our thoughts on this year’s festival and think about the next one.

“We want to encourage anyone with a view to let us know it so we can make it even better. The folk festival was a huge team effort.”
