BRIDPORT’S town centre haven, the Borough Gardens, is set for a makeover.

The town council, working with Magna housing association, residents and local landscape architect Aileen Shackell, have set up a community project to improve the gardens.

And an open day is planned for next Wednesday, June 13 so that visitors can help to plan the project.

Coun Sarah Williams said: “We are keen to get people’s views and to involve the whole community, including visitors. Come along and fill in our questionnaire.”

Gardener Sarah Wilberforce is advising on planting and design.

She explained that this year the existing beds are being planted with bee-friendly plants.

Resident Eileen Haste has plans for a children’s garden, and an “edible garden”, while flowers, climbers and shrubs would provide colour and fragrance in a low-maintenance plan.

A longer-term scheme will be worked up in the winter. The aim is to make the gardens, off The Tanyard in South Street and Gundry Lane, a place cherished and respected by residents and visitors alike. The Open Day runs from 11am to 4pm.
