DORSET’S music service has been announced as a centre of excellence for music education.

The service, which is part of Dorset County Council, will become part of a nationwide network of 122 Music Education Hubs.

Each hub will provide instrumental lessons, bands, choirs, orchestras, and other music-making opportunities in and out of school for all children in their local area.

Dorset music service was successful in its bid to become the lead organisation for the Dorset Music Education Hub.

The service will receive more than £1.1m of funding during the next three years.

Councillor Toni Coombs, cabinet member for children’s services at Dorset County Council, said: “This award to become the music hub for Dorset is recognition of the quality of the Dorset Music Service.

“The service has already helped to transform the lives of many of Dorset’s young people and this status will mean that countless more will benefit.”

The funding will lead to significant changes in music education both in and out of school.

The aim of this work is to make sure every young person between five and 18 years old has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and sing, and play with other children as part of an ensemble or choir.
