CHISWELL Community Trust is hosting a one-day event to help promote the Chiswell Earthworks and Portland and to forge a link between Portland and Nowhereisland.

The event, Tiedislands, will take place on Saturday, June 16, when it will be cried in at 12.30pm at Chiswell Walled Garden by town crier Stuart Cave.

There will be a welcome to a representative from Nowhereisland and to the Chiswell land sculpture artist, John Maine RA.

The aim is also to promote the trust and to help raise much-needed funds for the ongoing upkeep of the sites maintained by the trust. The event is free but donations will be welcomed.

At the invitation of Chiswell Community Trust, Nowhereisland, which will be moored off Bowleaze Cove during the Olympic sailing events, will sail into Portland waters on August 3 as it continues on its journey around ports in the region.

Devised by Alex Hartley and produced by Situations, Nowhereisland is part of the Cultural Olympiad and Maritime Mix and represents an Arctic island on a journey accompanied by its embassy.

Sandra Symes from the Chiswell Community Trust said: “This is a remarkable mobile museum telling the stories of this ambitious project and when it passes along our shores on August 3 it will be a case of two islands, both with remarkable stories, meeting each other.

“We are staging Tiedislands as both a celebration and invitation to think about art, nature and island living.”

There will be two key events on the day starting in the Walled Garden with a musical reception from the ukelele duo Till There Was Uke, who have written a special welcome song for Nowhereisland.

There will then be a public discussion between the representative from Nowhereisland the Curator Michael Prior and Earthworks artist John Maine. From 4.30pm until 6.30pm, live music on the Earthworks at West Weares will feature Weymouth Concert Brass, professional trumpet player Nigel Hopkins who will be performing a lively mix of music and playing his hit single High on a Hill.

Portland’s Arran Jung with Swift Current will also be appearing at the event which is being sponsored by many local organisations, individuals and the entertainers.
