Being proud Weymouth residents, my wife and I decided we would go into town to see the new and highly heralded laser light attraction on Weymouth seafront. I really liked the visual impression provided on the beach front by the new and nicely illuminated palm trees but this was contrasted by the rather naff look of the coloured vertical light tubes in the laser transmitter masts.

Suddenly a bright green light came from the easterly of the transmitter masts, closely followed by the lights from the next three masts but those to the west side of the bay seemed to have little light coming from them. The easterly ones changed shape slightly, then, after just a few minutes, they all went out. “What was that?” – or should I say, “What wasn’t that?” Some people departed then, muttering under their breaths but some of us decided to stay, not believing what we had seen was actually the show.

The whole ‘nothingness’ was repeated a few minutes later – it was ridiculous!

It should suffice to say that nobody was impressed.

To cap it all, the public address system, which I guess was supposed to be telling us all what was happening, was breaking down and for those of us on the westerly end of the beach, all that could be heard was an electronic gargle, like someone was being strangled! How bad did this all look and sound at a time when it is imperative we ensure these things go correctly, for the sake of Weymouth and Portland hoteliers, other business owners and all our townspeople and people who live in the general area?

Our council must be held totally responsible for this disaster. They have jointly wasted our money and, just as importantly, an opportunity – and this is just a continuation of a line of disasters that have occurred in Weymouth and Portland throughout this year and over previous 20 or more years.

All local politicians, of all parties, are all jointly responsible for allowing what should be a great town to become a depressed place of derision!

I cringe to think what might follow during the sailing Olympics but the continued failure of those that are supposed to be our leaders must stop now.
