Arts workshops

YOUNG people on Portland are being invited to help make 1,000 butterflies at a free art event this Saturday.

An Olympic-themed workshop will be taking place at Fancys Farm from 1pm until 3pm, run by Dorset Scrap and Lorna Rees, pictured right, creative producer from Activate Performing Arts.

A Revive Portland spokesman said: “We need to make another 1,000 butterflies for the Battle for the Winds event at the High Angle Battery fort in July.

“All materials will be provided and the workshops are free of charge.”

A total of 2,692 butterflies – the number representing each child on the island – are being handmade by youth and community groups for the Battle for the Winds grand finale.

The Portland performance on Saturday, July 27 will feature Doldrum in eerie quarry tunnels where he has imprisoned winds and trapped the voice and breath of youth.

The Giant Wall is an Inspire Mark project that aims to produce two large wall hangings of inspirational portraits to be displayed in Portland and Weymouth during the Olympics.

Residents of all ages are invited to join in and get help from Artwey artists to produce portraits of the ‘giants’ in their lives.

Particpants are asked to bring a 5in by 7in photograph of their local hero to the workshop.
