A GROUP of Girl Guides will be building international relations at a summer camp.

The 13th Weymouth Guides have been awarded a lottery grant worth £8,536 to put towards tents and entry fees to the camp in Hampshire.

The money will be supplemented by £600 the Guides, aged between 10 and 14, have raised themselves through jumble sales and packing bags in supermarkets.

Group assistant Lorna Charnock, whose daughter Chantelle became one of the youngest Guide leaders aged just 18, said: “They are a really good group of girls who would help anybody and they are really looking forward to this trip.”

The international camp, Flame 2012, will be held near Lyndhurst at the end of July.

More than 1,000 Girl Guides from all over the world, including Australia and the United States, are expected to attend.

Activities will include arts and crafts and singing as well as more adventurous tasks such as bush craft and raft building.

Group leader Chantelle, now 21, said: “The girls are really excited about this trip and it’s a great opportunity for them because it gives them the confidence to try things they would not normally get the chance to do.

“They will also get the chance to meet other girls from different countries.”

She added: “I’ve been involved in the Guiding movement since I was seven, and it has helped me a lot in life.”

The Guides, who are based at the Moose Lodge on Chickerell Road, have spent the past year raising money to go on the camp, which last took place in 2006.

Lorna Charnock said: “We have 22 girls in our group and this grant means all of them can take part.

“For the first time the camp are providing all the food, which gives us as leaders the chance to just spend some time with the girls and get to know them better.”

This year, the camp has an Olympic theme, and aims to bring the Guides together through the Olympic values.
