I READ with interest the article (Echo, June 20) with regard to a looming battle over the need for a new road to Portland Harbour.
I agree with the underlying reasoning being put forward by the campaigners in support of the scheme, but suggest that it does not go far enough. They claim the scheme could be the key to Portland’s future prosperity; yes, that is so, but more than that I suggest it is the future prosperity for Weymouth, Port-land, and Dorchester. The development of the harbour is a must, and it could become one of the biggest projects in the country if and when, it really gets off the ground. However, what needs to be done before any further major plans are approved in the county, let alone Weymouth and Portland, is for long-term planning to be carried out.
This should take into account all aspects, including future housing, road, town development, and commercial and community needs. And also, any plans that are already hidden away for the future development of Weymouth and around?
Lastly, in view of all the recent criticisms reported in the Echo, will our community fathers, in all the likely affected areas, be capable of undertaking such a review?
