A COUPLE who first met roller skating have just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Fay and Roger Hellaby, from Radipole, met when they were just 15 and 17 years old when they were partnered together in the Weymouth Roller Skating Revellers.

Mrs Hellaby, 78, said it was love at first sight for her when she looked across the room and saw Mr Hellaby.

The pair married when they were 17 and 18 years old on June 21, 1952.

Mrs Hellaby said that everyone had told them they were too young to be married.

She said: “I think they would eat their words now.”

The couple had two children Steven and Lynda, better known as Lyn, and have four grandchildren and lots of great grandchildren.

The whole family celebrated with a party at Moonfleet Manor Hotel. Mrs Hellaby said that everyone had a lovely time.

She said: “I can’t believe it’s been 60 years, but so much has happened in that time.”

The pair said they weren’t sure what the secret was to their success.

Mrs Hellaby said: “I think you do have to work at a marriage.”

Mr Hellaby, 80, said: “I think in marriage you either grow together or you grow apart.”

He said that the pair had been fortunate and that they had grown together.

He added: “It’s honesty with one another.

“We both like the same sort of things though we are different personalities and it’s possibly the differences that make life interesting. There’s a lot of hard work involved and you have got to compromise.”
