A COUNCILLOR is donning her running shoes and has her sights set on the highest point on the south coast.

Jane Bremner said she has been ‘running up any hills I come across’ in preparation for the task in aid of the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

She will take part in ‘The Challenge’, an event organised by Charmouth Primary School tackling an eight-mile route up Golden Cap, near Bridport.

The borough councillor for West Dorset said: “I decided it was something I wanted to do before I turn 50, which means I only have a few years left.

“I own and work at Wood Farm Caravan Park, in Charmouth, and Weldmar is one of our chosen charities to raise money for this year.”

She added: “It is a local charity providing much-needed local services, and that is so important.

“When you sponsor Weldmar, you really feel you are helping the community in their hour of need.”

‘The Challenge’ is part of the charity’s Go for Gold campaign, backed by the Dorset Echo and running throughout the summer.

Participants have already raised hundreds of pounds by completing sponsored events to raise money and awareness.

The charity looks after sufferers of long-term diseases nearing the end of their lives, but also offers respite care and services for survivors and those who are bereaved.

Staff hope the money raised by the campaign will enable them to take more services into more homes throughout Dorset.

Coun Bremner has been training since January in preparation for the run.

She said: “I have been doing a lot of weights to strengthen my legs and working on my stamina.

“I am feeling prepared and I think I have done everything I can.

“The scariest thing is that I have no idea what the weather will be like, and that’s an important factor.

“I’m hoping it will be quite grey and cool.

“If it is hot it will be even more difficult.”

‘The Challenge’ begins at Charmouth Primary School, goes up Stonebarrow Hill and Golden Cap.

The event takes place on Saturday.
