TWO people were injured when a coach clipped the window of a cafe, sending shattered glass over diners.

The coach, carrying a group of youngsters, was turning from St Mary Street right into St Edmund Street in Weymouth town centre when the collision happened. It is understood the coach’s wing mirror clipped the cafe window, causing it to break.

Two diners, sitting by the window in the Corner House Cafe in St Mary Street at the time of the collision, had to be treated by paramedics yesterday.

One woman suffered a gash to her head, and another hurt her back when a large piece of glass fell on her, cafe owner Milton Christos said.

Waitress Susan Jordan said both diners were ‘very lucky’.

She added: “It could have been a lot worse. I have worked here for more than eight years, and I have seen vehicles come close when they come around that corner.

“It was quite a frightening experience.”

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service Trust (SWAST) said: “We received a phone call at 12.33pm and one rapid response vehicle attended.

“One middle-aged woman was conveyed to Weymouth Community Hospital and another patient was treated on scene for minor injuries.”

Mr Christos said customers jumped out of their seats when the wing mirror collided with the window.

He said: “I saw it coming, and the coach went straight into it.

“I have seen big vehicles come around that corner before and have to reverse to get around it.

“It’s ridiculous.”

Mr Christos said the accident had affected his business.

“It happened right in the middle of lunchtime. I could not charge the two people who were injured for a start, because there was glass in their food.

“Even after the glass was cleared away, I could not seat anyone at those tables, so I lost business that way.

“It’s just irritating because they are my best seats. People want to sit by the window.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “At 1.13pm we had a phone call stating that a coach had driven into the window of the location.

The mirror of the coach clipped the window and the glass shattered.

“The coach was a Volvo single-decker, multi-coloured vehicle registered to a company from Poole. One person suffered slight injuries from the glass shattering.”

Coach company Cavendish Liner declined to comment.
