AN AMBULANCE was involved in a collision that caused the closure of the Weymouth Relief Road.

A woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries following the incident near West Farm, Lower Bincombe, on the A354 at around 4.40pm on Saturday.

The collision involved a blue Audi A3 and a South West Ambulance Service ambulance carrying a 94-year-old woman from Weymouth and her 55-year-old daughter from Crossways to Dorset County Hospital .

A police spokesman said: “As a result of the impact the vehicles crossed the carriageway and blocked the southbound lane.

“The road was closed and diversions were put in place whilst the emergency services attended.”

The road was temporarily closed in both directions and northbound traffic was diverted along Dorchester Road while the scene was cleared.

The driver of the Audi, a 46-year-old woman from the Worcester area, sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Dorset County Hospital but was later discharged.

A child was also treated for minor injuries.

The elderly patient who was in the ambulance remained in hospital for observations and assessment.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that firefighters had attended the scene to assist.

Further ambulance crews also attended and the road was fully reopened again by 8.30pm.

Dane Vickers, who got caught up in the tailbacks, said: “It was dealt with fairly quickly but the roads were a lot quieter than I thought they would be with the Olympics on.

“The emergency services dealt with it all very quickly.”
