OLD school uniforms are being recycled on Portland and sent to East Africa to those most in need.

The Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy (IPACA) has teamed up with the charity Operation Sunshine, an organisation that sends practical aid directly to people in parts of East Africa.

As the predecessor schools that now make up the new academy had existing links with East Africa it was an obvious choice to team up with Operation Sunshine and send out old uniform that was no longer needed after the issue of the new academy uniform.

IPACA principal Alison Appleyard said: “Thank you to the parents of IPACA students and Dorset Schoolwear, for their generosity in donating old and surplus uniform to the very worthy charity Operation Sunshine.

“We are delighted that people in East Africa will be able to benefit from the goodwill of so many members of our local community.”

Every eight to 10 weeks the charity sends out six 40ft containers with donated goods such as food, clothing and medical supplies.

These go directly to orphanages, refugee camps, leper colonies, hospitals schools and remote villages.
