Students took part in a workshop that taught them about careers in care.

They had to learn how to listen and communicate, no matter how difficult the situation. Jenny Connelly from Training the Carer was there to help out with this workshop and took some time out to talk to us about some of the exercises they did that morning. Jenny said: “We did an activity where we played a song and then asked the students questions about it afterwards to test how good their listening ability was, as sometimes people listen without really hearing.

“We taught them how to communicate better verbally and physically.”

When we walked into the lesson today the students were involved in an exercise on communication where one person was blindfolded and guided by two others around an assault course, but the guides were not allowed to use words. This showed the importance of communicating by any means possible.

Members of Training the Carer were teaching the students about every spectrum of care including hygiene, which is a very important part of caring. Jenny said: “We all wash our hands but you’d be surprised how many of us don’t do it properly”. The students’ efforts where then tested under UV light to see the before and after effects.

They were also informed about the different types of careers in care.
