YOUNGSTERS from a Weymouth school enjoyed an autumn hands-on experience thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

The grant enabled pupils from Wyvern Academy’s secondary school to visit the Holton Lee environmental centre in Poole.

The £9,500 bid was made to the Lottery’s ‘Awards for All’ programme which supports community projects and was submitted by Holton Lee.

Wyvern Academy’s head of autism, Lisa White, said: “We’re absolutely delighted the Lottery has chosen to support this bid. It’s provided a wonderful opportunity for bringing our youngsters closer to the natural world.

“The highlight of the day was being shown a nest of snakes hidden in the woods.”

Pupils also had access to digital microscopes to view miniature worlds and special cameras that film animals at night.

They also visited the bird hides, followed a wheelchair trail through a variety of habitats and captured insects and bugs to find out more about their life cycles.

Geoff Jones, Holton Lee’s environment manager, said: “We aim to bring visitors closer to the natural world and to use that for a fun, creative and educational follow-up session.”

Wyvern Academy is a purpose-built school for youngsters aged from two to 19, with complex needs, including autistic spectrum disorder.
