BOURNEMOUTH West MP Sir John Butterfill has responded to the suggestion from Conservative Party leader David Cameron that he could be disciplined over his expenses claims.

The Daily Telegraph alleged that Sir John had avoided capital gains tax on the £1.2 million sale of his mansion in Surrey, nominated as his second home.

Mr Cameron told BBC’s Politics Show he did not think it right for any MP to get money from taxpayers for nominated second homes, then avoid paying capital gains tax on their sale.

Sir John told the Daily Echo: “I don’t believe I made a profit, contrary to what was said in the Telegraph.

“They said I bought this property for £600,000 and sold it for £1.2 million. If anything I made a loss.

“We bought it as a shell and virtually rebuilt the whole place.

“The architect at the time said it would be cheaper to pull it down and start again. That was probably wise advice.

“I have already had a discussion with the committee that looks at all of this. As a result, I have got to pay back some money to the Fees Office.

“I’m trying to work out how much.

“I’ve got to get accounts from nearly 10 years ago and it’s going to take some time.”
