IT isn’t the national Open Farm Sunday, but two family enterprises in West Bexington are having their annual open days between 10.30am and 4pm on Sunday.

Between them, the families who run Tamarisk Farm, which includes Labour-in-Vain Farm, Cogden National Trust land and Sea Spring Farm, have a wealth of knowledge and want to share it.

Ellen Simon of Tamarisk Farm said: “Everyone is invited to join us for our annual open day to visit two working farms in West Bexington.

“As ever, this promises to be an interesting and enjoyable day with new things to see and talk about, and new challenges to discuss.

“Drop in for 10 minutes or two hours, join us just for a cup of tea and a chat or stay for a full farm walk and lunch.

“We are happy to discuss more about where your food comes from or talk to us about our philosophy and practice, then tour the farms and market gardens and join us for tea.”

At Tamarisk Farm, Adam and Ellen Simon farm organic cattle, sheep, cereals and vegetables.

There will be organic meat, flour and vegetables on sale.

More information from 01308 897781 and 897784 or on the website tamariskfarm.co.uk.

There will be a flour milling tour with bread samples to taste and recipes to discuss, and a farm walk to see crops, animals and wild flowers.

There is also the chance to see sheepskins and a new range of natural coloured knitting wools from their own sheep.

Enthusiasts can walk around and taste the vegetable garden with Arthur Pearse – who, with wife Josephine, were among the very first members of the Soil Association, and tap his extensive experience.

They are prepared to answer those hard questions which challenge them to justify why they farm the way they do.

Joy and Michael Michaud are specialist growers of chillies and other vegetables, and there will be fresh chillies, chilli plants and seeds on sale.
