HERE'S a trip down memory lane to a Dorset Evening Echo front page from Wednesday, February 2 1983.

The paper covered the story of a driver's miracle escape from a furniture van which blew off Ferrybridge, Weymouth, into the sea.

The van driver, from Reading, plummeted 25ft off the bridge in the van and escaped through the smashed windscreen as the van began filling with water.

The driver, Ian Cleeton-Smith, said: "Once I knew I was all right there was one thing uppermost in my mind - if I had been in a seat belt I would be dead by now."

Also featured on the front page was an advert for Broadwey Motors offering a Ferrari 308 GTB at £14,995 and a teaser about the new E.T. film, which of course, went on to become a massive hit.
