BACK in June, we wrote about the Dorset Police Force keeping the streets safe in Dorchester in the 50s.

Ian Swatridge sent in pictures of the Assize Squad at a parade in the High Street and wished to find out more about the force that his grandfather was in.

Thanks you to Jean Matthews got in touch with some more wonderful photos and memories after seeing the piece in Looking Back.

Jean said: "I was so surprised to see the Dorset Constabulary Assize Squad.

"I worked as a civilian clerk at Police HQ, Weymouth Avenue, starting straight from the S.D.T College in 1946 aged 15 years.

"I was in the training department. The war was just over, the men were returning from the armed forces. Many recruits were needed and one of the requirements was that they had to be five feet 10 and a half inches."

Jean said: "This was strictly adhered to. One of our extra jobs in the training department was the Assize Squad – these men were all chosen because they were six feet or over – and very smart they were, as you can see."

The clerks in the picture are Jean West, Kathleen Malkin, Linda Pucket, ? and Stella Screen at the back.

Leading the squad in the second picture is Inspector Richard Baigent.
