Free events are being held to mark the golden anniversary of protected beauty spots.

The Love For The Land programme is being held from July 13 to 25 for the 50th anniversary of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB).

There will be free walks, bicycle rides and activities for families.

Author and poet James Crowden will lead a walk from Pilsdon Pen and explore how the landscape has inspired writers.

Farmer Andy Foot will welcome people to his farm and hold an early-evening barbecue.

Artist Chris Holland will be working with children to make mini-beasts from natural materials in Bonsley Wood, near Blandford.

Insect expert Stella Huntington will be stream-dipping in the Winterbournes.

Dorset AONB manager Sarah Bentley said: “We really wanted to show off the best bits of the area and get people to explore the fantastic natural beauty on their doorstep.

“But there’s more to the landscape than great views.

“We have asked farmers, geologists, bug experts and artists to help run the events and share their love of the land with us.”

The Dorset AONB is one of 41 in England and Wales. It covers 42 per cent of the county and recognises the national importance of Dorset’s landscape, heritage and environment.
