INTREPID student Harriet Brown is preparing for the fundraising adventure of her life.

This August, the 19-year-old student from Weymouth is planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Association.

She has to raise £2,500 before she even sets foot on the mountain and hopes people will support and help her raise as much as possible.

Harriet, who is studying business administration at Portsmouth University, said: “I am looking forward to it but I think it will be really scary at the same time.

“I decided to do the challenge with some friends from uni and felt that the Meningitis Research Association was a really good charity to raise money for. You hear some really scary stories about the disease so I want to do all I can to help.” When Harriet is not studying at Portsmouth, she lives at home with her family in Weymouth Bay Avenue. She is planning a number of fundraising events both at university and in Weymouth in the coming months.

Mount Kilimanjaro, which is a dormant volcano with three cones, has become a popular destination for people who want to challenge themselves physically and help charities at the same time.

It stands at 5,895 metres high and was first climbed in 1898.

Harriet said: “I think it will take about two weeks to climb and I’m not looking forward to the altitude sickness because there’s not a lot you can do to prepare for that.”
