A GRANDFATHER has hit out at a Dorchester store that refused to let his two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter use their staff toilet.

Andrew Chutter, from Charlton Down, was in the county town with his young relative when the youngster – who is in the process of toilet training – announced she was desperate for the loo.

He said he went into Superdrug and asked politely if they could use the staff facilities but were told that it would not be possible.

Mr Chutter said he was ‘disgusted’ at the response from Superdrug staff, particularly when compared with the response from other stores in the town.

He said that on the occasion in question they were forced to go to Gould’s department store, where staff were only too keen to help and even fetched a key so they could use the disabled toilet.

Mr Chutter said he also spoke to staff at various other stores in the town, including Co-Operative and Lidl, to see what their response would be in the same situation and they all indicated they would offer the use of their facilities.

Mr Chutter said he felt people should be made aware of the attitude adopted by Superdrug.

He told the Echo: “I thought it was disgusting.

“I just think they should help the general public – after all they survive on us going into their store and spending our money there.

“She’s only two and a half – it wouldn’t have hurt them to make an exception.”

He added: “I went into Gould’s and they were so helpful, I also went into Co-Op and asked one of the chaps at the till if they had a little girl wanting the toilet would they make an exception and they said they would.

“I also went into Lidl and they said the same.”

Mr Chutter said he had also received plenty of support on social media from people who were equally outraged by the behaviour of the high street store.

In response to a request for a comment from the Dorset Echo, a spokesman for Superdrug said: “Unfortunately Superdrug Dorchester doesn’t provide public toilets and we are sorry that your reader was disappointed his granddaughter couldn’t use the staff facilities.”
