A SMALL cartoon was one of the surprise top sellers at Cottees of Wareham's latest auction.

The small pen and ink drawing had been purchased by the vendor at a charity auction twenty years ago.

The cartoon, by Norman Thelwell, depicted a family on a beach at sunset where the children had presumably buried the father and was entitled, 'Well you'd better remember where you buried him quick! He's due on the early shift in the morning'.

It sold for an impressive £480.

John Condie, auctioneer at Cottees, said: "Our next auction will be held on May 26 and will include more than 100 lots of Moorcroft Pottery.

"Modern and old Moorcroft will be included in the auction."

Cottees are also proud to announce that they have recently appointed Nell Hilditch as head of the collectable toy and model railway department.

She is available every day at Cottees East Street premises for valuations of all types of collectable toys, from model railway to dolls and teddy bears. Nell has a special interest in modern toys which were related to TV series and films and previously worked for a Midlands firm of auctioneers.

Cottees next Toy Auction will be held on Saturday June 13 at 10am.
