A CAR owners club has set up a bursary fund to help students at Kingston Maurward College.

The Association of Singer Car Owners have set up the George Singer Memorial Fund to help students who meet a specific criteria.

The fund has been set up to celebrate the link between the college and the Singer and Co Cars founder George Singer.

George Singer was born in the parish and his father was farm bailiff at Kingston Maurward.

The club has celebrated its link with the college before and in 2013 held a lakeside rally of some of its cars followed by a ceremony and unveiling of a memorial plaque which is located outside the sixteenth century Manor House on the estate where George Singer’s parents lived.

ASCO president, John Horn said: “We wanted the fund to be specifically to help someone up the ladder and to mirror George Singer’s outlook.

“He was known for his philanthropic attitude towards his own workforce and actively encouraged activities that would maintain their health and wellbeing – we hope that the bursary fund will echo this for Kingston Maurward students.”

Committee members of the College’s charity, the Kingston Maurward Foundation (KMF), will choose the recipient of the bursary based on the student’s attitude to learning, commitment to their course and their circumstances.

The first bursary cheque of £300 was presented to the college at a recent open day which the club attended with some of their vehicles.

The cheque was presented to KMF chair, Reverend Canon Doctor Jean Coates by Mr Horn.

Reverend Canon Doctor Jean Coates, said: “On behalf of Kingston Maurward Foundation we really are very grateful for the generosity of the members of this wonderful club.

“This will be a welcome contribution for one of our horticulture students this year, in reward for their hard work and will help them continue their studies.”

Singer and Co was founded in 1875 manufacturing high quality bicycles, this involved in to motorcycles before they started manufacturing cars in 1904.

The company was bought by Chrysler and the Rootes group in 1970.
