AN AVID Dorchester Town FC fan who has followed the Magpies for 70 years has been honoured by the club.

Eileen Aplin, aged 86, was invited onto the pitch at the Avenue Stadium ahead of the club's recent game against Slough.

She was applauded by officials, players and around 400 spectators before receiving a special certificate of recognition and a commemorative football signed by all of the first team squad.

This is not the first time Eileen’s loyalty and service has been recognised.

She joined the Supporters Club in 1972, being one of the first three ladies to be allowed such membership, and was given a special medal after 50 years of loyal service.

Eileen is a Life Vice President of Dorchester Football Club and rarely misses a home match when her beloved Magpies are in action.

The club's community director Allen Knott said: "Eileen is a shining example. All our supporters can only aspire to be regarded with such respect and admiration."

Eileen has many wonderful memories involving the club including the time when she accompanied the players to an away match.

They had to change trains in London and Eileen was a bit slower than she might have been.

To make sure she didn’t miss the train the players kept getting on and off the train to stop it leaving until she arrived.

She said: "It’s all about winning and I try not to shout at the referees but sometimes that is very difficult.

"I especially love watching the youngsters playing and developing their ball control skills.

"It’s a great game and good discipline. I recommend it."

As well as honouring the older generation of Magpies fans, Mr Knott said the club is actively encouraging young people to get involved.

He said:"We have mascots accompanying our players onto the pitch at the start of home matches and now wish to recruit ball boys and girls.

"These youngsters aged around 13years wear an official reflective bib and sit near the touchline.

"They are responsible for gathering up, wiping and returning out of play balls to the player waiting to take the throw in.

"Parental consent forms are available at the club. Ask at the office or contact me on any match day."
