THE MAYOR and Mayoress of Dorchester will be celebrating the bank holiday in style as they host the May-oral family fun day.

The event will be the final fundraiser hosted by Mayor Tim Harries and his wife Anita before they step down from post at the end of May.

The Borough Gardens will be bustling with activities for all those of all ages including falconry, a bouncy castle, and traditional Maypole dancing.

Cllr Harries said the event will be their “last hurrah” after a “wonderful year.”

He said: “This year has been great fun we have had a lovely time. There’s going to be all sorts to do at the fun day.

“We have lots of volunteers helping us out, we have wonderful live music and lots of activities for the children, there really will be something for everyone.”

Accountant Mark Cummins and Hearn and Sons specialist roofers are the main sponsors behind the event, with Dorchester Football Club also on hand to play beat the goalie.

Entertainment in the form of live music will include popular folk musician Nina Garcia, alongside the Wessex Military Band, the Pop Club and vintage singing group The Decadettes.

Punch and Judy, superheroes and children’s favourite Jack Sparrow will be making an appearance at the gardens to keep the little ones amused.

There will also be a bar, burgers, hot dogs, face-painting and plenty of stalls for visitors to browse.

While the event will be raising funds for the Mayor’s charities, Mayoress harries says the focus really will be on having fun.

She said: “It’s just going to be a lot of fun for the family. We have had such a good year we felt that we wanted to give something back now.

“Of course it’s raising money but we wanted to give something back to everyone who comes along to say thank you for your support over the last 12 months.”

The fundraiser culminates a busy year of fundraising for the pair including a host of first-time events such as the Mayor's Musical Mash up, the Shrove Tuesday pancake race, the Easter Friary Hill Egg.

Councillor Susie Hosford will replace Cllr Harries and the county town’s first citizen following the formal mayor making ceremony.
