A Dorchester councillor is backing proposals that will see the relocation of the town's Post Office.

As reported in the Echo, a public consultation has been launched to relocate Dorchester's Victoria Park Post Office on Maud Road to Central Convenience Stores, also on Maud Road.

In 2016 the Post Office had proposed to move the branch on Maud Road to Poundbury Village Stores, Middlemarsh Street.

During the public consultation, Cllr Gerald Duke, launched a petition to keep the Post Office on Maud Road as he believed its proposed location in Poundbury would "threaten the viability of the existing Post Office services".

But the new proposal for the Post Office sees strong backing from the councillor, who believes it is a much more sustainable solution.

In the new proposal, Post Office services would be provided from three modern counters including two modern full-screened counters and an open-plan counter alongside the retail counter and would see significantly extended opening hours.

Cllr Duke said: "The retention of the Post Office in Maud Road last year was a temporary holding measure brought about by a strong response be residents to the public consultation exercise who objected to a proposed move to an unsuitable site.

"There is a new consultation taking place to ensure a much more sustainable solution and retain the Post Office in the immediate area of Maud Road."

Cllr Duke has endorsed the proposals and is encouraging all residents to get involved in the new consultation.

He believes these proposals are a major improvement on what was previously on offer.

The consultation will close on Tuesday, August 8 2017. Submissions can be made during the consultation by Freepost YOUR COMMENTS to Post Office Ltd, via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, via the Customer Helpline on 03457 22 33 44 or Textphone 03457 22 33 55.
