A sea of red suits and bushy white beards took over Dorchester yesterday to raise money for a Dorset charity.

The sun was fortunately shining as runners once again took to the streets of Dorchester for the seventh annual Santa Fun Run.

The event, which sees hundreds of runners don Santa costumes and race round two miles around Poundbury, raises much needed funds for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Among those taking part were Sioux Quinn-Smith and Alex Emery who work at Charminster Pre-school.

Alex said: "Last year I did it with my family and we had such fun we decided to do it again and support a good cause in Dorchester. It's a fun, festive event and what a beautiful day for it."

They pair added, this year they had assembled a team of colleagues together to run and raise funds.

This year the event attracted a record number of Santas, with more than 200 people of all ages taking part.

Dorchester resident, Dave Clack who was at the event with friends and their children said: "We really wanted to do the run and it's a chance to raise money for a really brilliant cause at the same time."

Runners were limbered up by personal trainer, Jo Thompson who put them through a rigorous aerobics routine to prepare them for the festive dash.

Community fundraiser for Weldmar, Alaine Harman said: "I'm really excited about the day. It's a fantastic day for families and really great to see everyone dressed up in their outfits."

Starting and ending at Dorchester Rugby Club, the Santa run course covers two miles around Poundbury, which participants can either run or walk.

Children were given sacks at the start which they had to fill on the way round with goodies passed out by marshals.

In the seven years it's been running, the Santa Fun Run has contributed £26,000 to help Weldmar support patients and their families across Dorset.

Weldmar volunteer, Trevor Lewis said: "I think it's great that local people are able to come down, have fun and support a local hospice charity. "
