Do you want to become a safer rider on Dorset's busy roads? Would you like to improve your riding skills or build your confidence?

The Dorchester and West Dorset Advanced Motorcyclists (DWDAM) is running a skills event later this month and is encouraging riders - no matter how experience - to join.

Motorcyclists will be riding their own bike on a route pre-defined by one of DWDAM’s qualified observers, stop for a quick chat and then follow the observer for a brief advanced riding demonstration. They will switch places again for the ride back to Dorchester so that the rider can put into practice the techniques they have been shown. On return there will be a short de-brief where the rider will be advised of their skill levels by their observer.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 21 and the IAM RoadSmart affiliated group will be meeting at the Dorchester Market Café.

Riders are welcome to join the group at 8.30am for breakfast before setting off a 9.30am for a free Advanced Motorcycle Riding Skills Session.

The whole ride and chat should take around two hours. On completion, riders can be on their way, unless they wish to hang around with the DWDAM team and find out more about how advanced rider training could permanently improve your riding.

Riders will require to be in possession of either a Cat A2 or a Cat A Motorcycle Licence and their bike must be capable of riding to the national speed limit, be road-legal (have a valid V5C registration certificate (log book), taxed, insured and have an MOT.

Brian Purnell, DWDAM chairman, said "Whatever your level of riding, every motorcyclist is encouraged to make a commitment to develop their road riding skills to the point that they are better at anticipating and avoiding their SMIDSY moment (sorry, mate, I didn't see you). They should ask themselves how good is my observation - 'do I look but don't necessarily see' and 'does my safety override everything?"

"DWDAM believes that the best way to understand and develop new skills is to see and feel them in practice. Developing new skills under the guidance of experts, learning about advanced riding techniques in the company of enthusiastic riders is hard to beat."
