PORTLAND Port's cruise ship season has officially begun.

The port – which is expecting a record-breaking season in 2018 – welcomed its first ship of the season this morning, the 28,000 tonne, 205m long MS Albatros, operated by Phoenix Reisen.

The cruise ship carries up to 830 guests, mostly from Germany.

Portland Port is expecting 32 cruise ships to visit this season, bringing nearly 39,000 passengers.

In 2017, 34,000 passengers visited the region on 26 ships.

As reported by the Dorset Echo, the second cruise call of 2018 is on April 25 and marks an exciting point in the development of the port’s cruise business – the inaugural visit of Norwegian Cruise Line’s, Norwegian Breakaway.

This will be the longest and heaviest vessel to ever dock at Portland Port and will bring with her the greatest number of passengers on one ship that the port has dealt with to date.
