THE perennially popular John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra is celebrating a vintage year with a tour that takes in Dorset tonight. (17)

Musicians will perform numbers from the movies at Lighthouse, Poole

This year has seen the release of their first live album, Gershwin in Hollywood: Live At The Royal Albert Hall, a coveted win at the Echo Klassik awards in Germany for the Cole Porter In Hollywood recording, and an annual return to the BBC Proms which sold out in record time.

In September 2016 the John Wilson Orchestra made its debut at the Musikfest Berlin in a concert celebrating the MGM film musicals at Berlin’s iconic Philharmonie concert hall.

The orchestra was invited to the festival on the recommendation of Sir Simon Rattle who came and played timpani with the John Wilson Orchestra for the concert’s encore.

The concert was broadcast by the Berlin Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall and has been enjoyed by new fans all over the world.

Music from the Movies will celebrate Oscar winning songs and Oscar winning movie scores from the golden era of Hollywood.

Coinciding with this, Warner Classics will release a special treat for fans, with a live recording of I Was Doing All Right with the divine Louise Dearman, taken from the 1937 film The Goldwyn Follies.

Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015, the culmination of their successful thirteen-date 2015 national concert tour, the track is the perfect accompaniment to those who have enjoyed the full length live album, Gershwin In Hollywood, released earlier this year.

Gershwin In Hollywood reminded us not only of the genius that were the Gershwins, but also the impeccable ability of the John Wilson Orchestra to transport us seamlessly to the golden age of the silver screen.

n John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra is at Lighthouse, Poole, tonight at 7pm. Contact the box office for tickets.
