AN annual service to commemorate US troops who died in the Second World War takes place later this month.

US Memorial Day service will take place at the Weymouth American War Memorial on the Esplanade on Monday, May 25 at 11am.

Local veterans, association representatives and residents will be present to show their respect and remember US personnel who gave their lives during the war.

Mayor’s Chaplin Father Richard Harper will be carrying out the service.

The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland will lead the service and lay a wreath on behalf of the borough at this important commemoration.

Following the official wreath laying ceremony, association representatives and the general public will be invited to lay wreaths.

Nick Thornley, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s head of economy, leisure and tourism said: “Weymouth, Portland and Dorset have a long and proud relationship with the United States of America and Allied Forces.

“This important memorial day gives the borough and its residents an opportunity to pay its respects and strengthen the relationship with our American compatriots”.
