A SEARCH is underway to try and find the owner of a medal found at Weymouth Veterans Weekend.

The medal was found in Weymouth last weekend following the Weymouth Armed Forces and Veterans Day Parade and it is hoped that the medal can soon be reunited with its owner.

It was found in the Swannery Car Park following the events on Sunday.

Phil Young, who is trying to reunite the medal with its owner, is hopeful that they will be able to find the person the medal belongs to.

The medal was passed on to him by a friend after it was found because Mr Young has a military history.

He said: “A friend of mine found it in the Swannery Car Park after the Veterans Parade.

“I work with her and she came in on Monday. She didn’t even know there was any writing on medals or anything.”

The medal is a General Service Medal.

The medal was awarded to a G Willis, an RO2 at the time in the Royal Navy.

The medal was awarded for service during the Malay Peninsula Campaign which took place between 1964 and 1966 in Borneo.

Mr Young, understand just how precious these medals can be to former personnel.

He said: “I was in the forces and I’ve been getting in touch with the British Legion but I’ve not had any luck. They’re putting it round the various branch chairmen.

“I’ve put it on the lost medals website as well.”

“He will be in his 70s or 80s, I can imagine if he’s realised that it is missing he will be quite worried about it.”

However, there is also a possibility that the person missing the medal is yet to realise that it has been misplaced.

With Armed Forces Day taking place this Saturday, June 27, Mr Young hopes that it won’t be too long until the person missing the medal realised he has lost it.

He said: “It’s lucky, this week there is more events. He should find out that he’s lost it by the weekend.

“If there wasn’t more events he might not have noticed it was missing until November or something.”
