A WEYMOUTH man has been given one last chance to kick his cannabis habit after being charged with possession of the Class B drug and breach of a suspended sentence order.

Ashley Anthony Mitchell, aged 33, of Wiltshire Avenue, Weymouth, appeared at Dorchester Crown Court for sentencing after previously admitting to both offences.

Tom Wright, prosecuting, told the court police officers had found a quantity of cannabis, stalks and plant matter in Mitchell’s loft after a search warrant had been executed in May earlier this year.

The court also heard Mitchell had received an eight month prison sentence suspended for two years for a previous offence in April last year.

Tim Shorter, mitigating, asked Judge Douglas Field not to activate the suspended sentence but instead follow the suggestions given in Mitchell’s pre-sentence report, which he deemed proportionate and appropriate.

The court heard Mitchell had smoked cannabis to assist with depression and sleeping.

Mr Shorter said Mitchell was making ‘considerable efforts’ to put himself in a better position.

Mitchell received a 12-month community order and is required to undertake a rehabilitation activity. His suspended sentence will remain hanging over him until April. He will also be electronically monitored whilst under curfew for three months. He will be required to stay at his address between the hours of 8pm and 7am.

Judge Field said: “This is your last chance to make sure that you try and overcome this cannabis habit so you don’t put yourself at risk and indeed don’t put your family at risk.”
