A FUNDRAISING page has been set up to 'restore a veteran’s faith in humanity' after he was pushed off his mobility scooter and robbed.

Danielle Mason, from Weymouth, said she was so disgusted when she heard about what had happened to 93-year-old Second World War veteran Jim Day that she wanted to set up the Just Giving page in order to give him something back and restore his faith in people.

Half the money will be donated to the Royal British Legion and half will go to Mr Day.

As reported in the Echo, Mr Day, a veteran who served in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines at Dunkirk and Burma, was travelling towards his home in Wimborne on his mobility scooter when he was grabbed from behind and pushed to the floor. The offender took a quantity of cash from his wallet and fled the scene.

Dorset Police called it a 'cowardly' attack.

It happened last Sunday afternoon at the junction of West Moors Road and Wimborne Road East, Ferndown.

Mr Day said: “For anyone to do this to an able-bodied person is bad enough, but to do it to me is despicable.”

The Echo's sister paper, the Daily Echo in Bournemouth, has been flooded with offers of help for Mr Day including the local branch of the Royal British legion whose members branded the robbery 'disgusting' and the 'lowest of the low'.

Mrs Mason, 33, said the story had upset her and she wanted to do something to help. Her Just Giving page has been shared as far afield as London and donations have already started to come in. She called the crime “despicable and shocking.”

She said: “I read about it in the Dorset Echo and it really touched me, because he served in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and fought for our county and this happens.

“I wanted to give him a bit of faith back in humanity.”

She added: “It’s absolutely disgusting – especially at this time of year when it's Remembrance Day – it’s really upset me.”
