A FAMILY festival which gets bigger every year is back with a bang in 2016.

It may be some months away but preparations are being made for Fayre in the Square, a two-day extravaganza set in Hope Square and around Weymouth’s old harbourside over the Whitsun bank holiday.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth to attract more people to the Brewers Quay side of the harbour and to fill a gap left by Trawler Race Day festivities, the event has been tremendously successful in its first two years with thousands flocking to enjoy live music, food and drink stands, stalls and street theatre. This year, £16,000 was raised for good causes.

Dennis Corbett from the club said: “Just as we approach Christmas, the Rotary Club of Weymouth start to look forward to its premier annual event, Fayre in the Square.

“For anyone who has missed the first two events it is held on the main May bank holiday, which means it will be Sunday, May 29 and Monday, May 30 in 2016.

“For the first time there will be a launch party on Saturday, May 28 to be held on the tall ship Pelican. More details will follow in the new year.”

The club was able to support around 30 local good causes this year.

Members were particularly pleased to be able to help local teen Mitchel Harvey, who has cerebral palsy.

Mr Corbett said: “None of our donations quite compared to the help our donation made to young Mitchel.

“This brave young man suffers a range of disabilities, and needed to raise £10,000 to purchase a special wheelchair.

“We are delighted that our small donation made up the final amount needed to be able to obtain the wheelchair.

“Everyone at Rotary wishes Mitchel every success in the future and we are glad that Fayre in the Square was able to help.”
