FIREFIGHTERS worked for more than 20 minutes to cut an injured woman free from a car after a head-on crash in Weymouth.

The crash happened at around 11.35am on Wednesday on Boot Hill at the junction with Chickerell Road.

Two vehicles, a white Mercedes and a white Vauxhall Insignia, collided head-on, leaving two women injured.

In order to release one of the casualties, a woman in her 50s, firefighters had to cut the roof from the Vauxhall.

After more than 20 minutes of careful work, they were able to lift her and place her in the hands of paramedics who took her to Dorset County Hospital with what were described by an ambulance service spokesman as minor injuries.

The other casualty, a woman in her 60s, was treated on scene.

Operations officer at South Western Ambulance Service, Adam Collinge said: “We were called at 11.36am to a two car collision towards the bottom of Boot Hill.

“Three vehicles attended the incident - one response car and two ambulances.

“It is quite possible that one of the casualties suffered a medical episode immediately prior to the collision.”

PC Redmond of Weymouth traffic police, who attended the crash, said: “A car coming down the hill, for reasons unknown, went on to the other side of the road.

“It collided with the white Mercedes coming up the hill.

“At this time we do not believe any serious injuries have taken place.

“As chance would have it, an ambulance was coming up behind the Mercedes, so we have a pretty clear understanding of what went on.”

The north bound lane of Boot Hill, the A354, was closed for two hours as emergency services cleared the scene.

BT were also called to inspect an circuit box into which the Vauxhall had crashed.
