CHILDREN on the Kingfisher ward at Dorset County Hospital got a sweet treat thanks to members of a scooter club.

The Weymouth-based Lowriders Scooters Club took an Easter ride to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester - where they delivered more than 70 Easter eggs to children receiving treatment on the Kingfisher ward.

The Lowriders number one, Kev Benson, also handed over a cheque for £200 to staff nurse Tash Collins.

The cash was raised from sales of a calendar commemorating the life of former Lowrider Tom Ashe.

Mr Ashe passed away last year aged 52 after a battle with cancer.

As well as being involved with the Lowriders, he worked as a nightclub doorman and taught Muay Thai Kickboxing at Weymouth Martial Arts Centre.

Friends described him as a 'role model' and a 'genuinely kind, generous, caring man'.

Sarah Hyder, one of the organisers of the Easter ride, said this year marks the Lowriders 25th anniversary, and the group wanted to do something to commemorate that and to remember their friend Tom, who was a 'well-loved and highly respected member of the club'.

So a calendar was made, and proceeds from its sale go to good causes.

Sarah said: "The scooter club in Poole do a similar ride out to take Easter eggs to kids in hospital, and a few of our members take part in that. Then last year we thought why not do it for our own local hospital in Dorchester."

The sun was shining, and everyone was in good spirits as the group headed up the Ridgeway to deliver their gifts, she added.

Sarah said: "It must have been quite a sight with all the scooters. But it was so lovely to see the smiles on the children's faces."

The club would like to thank Jerry Whyton, manager of Morrisons in Weymouth who donated the majority of the eggs with the rest of them coming from club members.
