A MAJOR investigation has been launched after an 18-year-old was raped in Bournemouth Gardens during a terrifying late night attack - the second sex assault there in eight days.

Police were called at 2.17am to the Lower Gardens after being alerted by a member of the public, prompting officers to cordon off an area of grass near the park’s balloon.

It is believed the offender, who was not known to the victim, followed the woman before carrying out the attack.

He is said to have dark hair and spoke with a local accent.

This latest incident comes after an 18-year-old Poole woman was the victim of a sex attack at 3.50am on Monday July 13 as she also walked in the Lower Gardens.

On that occasion the offender was described as white, aged in his early to mid-20s, 6ft tall and of a muscular build. He had short spiky brown or black hair and was wearing a dark blue plain short-sleeved T-shirt and dark jeans.

Bournemouth Central Neighbourhood Inspector Heather Dixey said the force is not ruling out that the two incidents might be connected and is keeping all lines of enquiry open.

“I would like to reassure the public that there will be additional dedicated patrols in the area,” she said. “We are also speaking to local businesses to reiterate our safety messages and are asking them to assist in keeping an eye out for vulnerable women on their own in and around the town.

“I would like to remind residents and visitors – as we do throughout the year – to be conscious of their own personal safety.

“It is essential that everyone takes a common sense approach and trusts their instincts – if you don’t feel comfortable in a particular area, then take another route.

“All year round and all over the country, there are many things that people can do to ensure that they are safe, such as walking with friends, carrying a mobile phone and letting people know where you are.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101, quoting incident number 21:25. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
