Cllr Francis Drake, briefholder for community safety at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, urged anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact the police.

He said: “I’m really shocked but it I must admit, this is not the sort of thing that happens in that part of town and it’s now up to the police to see what they are going to do.

“We don’t really want to go down this way and we don’t want this thing to happen in Weymouth, but it is human nature.

“If people disagree with each other or argue with each other, it would be best to try and sit down and talk about it but sometimes fists do fly and this shows how bad it can be.

“It’s normally quite good in Weymouth.

“There are hotspots in the town by the harbour and at the seafront where the nightclubs are, but not at this part of town outside New Look. My business is up towards that end of town and we don’t normally get anything like this.

“Of course I would urge anyone who saw it or knows anything about it to contact the police.”

A 28-year-old man from Yeovil has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is on police bail pending further enquiries.
