HEAVY rain and strong winds are heading for Dorset this weekend, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow 'be aware' alert has been issued for Saturday from 6am until just before midnight.

Around 20 to 30mm of rainfall is expected with 40 to 60mm possible in some areas.

Gales are also expected with gusts of 40 to 50mph inland with 60mph winds on south-facing coasts.

The rain and gales will clear during the evening but the Met Office is warning of a risk of localised flooding and with potential of disruption to travel.

A spokesperson said: "An active, complex frontal system is expected to affect the area on Saturday.

"As relatively warm, moist air is drawn up from the southwest on the strong southwesterly flow, heavy rain is expected.

"There may also be short periods of locally quite intense rainfall embedded within the relatively broad rainfall area.

"There is some uncertainty regarding the eastward extent of the heavy rain across southern England and this warning will be updated as new information comes available."
