RESIDENTS are joining together to say ‘Happy birthday ma’am’.

Union flags and hats are being dug out while the kettle is being boiled and cucumber sandwiches cut as plans are drawn up for an afternoon street party in Weymouth’s Park District on Saturday, June 11 to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Patriotic residents in the Melcombe Regis community were among those in Dorset who organised a street party to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas and the party was moved inside to the Park Community Centre.

That same contingency is available this year, but it is hoped the sun will be shining.

The party will be held outside the community centre in Chelmsford Street and the street will be closed for most of the day between Lennox Street and Hardwick Street. Due to limited numbers, bookings have been taken from Park District residents only.

However, the new Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Richard Kosior and South Dorset MP Richard Drax will be joining the party.

Residents who have booked a place have been invited to bring their own food while entertainment will be laid on.

Genny Burchill from the Waterside Weymouth Community Forum said: “A full programme of entertainment has been organised including face painting, games, the local choir, street dance and music.

“Numbers have had to be limited in case of inclement weather forcing a move inside, and therefore bookings have been taken from people in this area only hoping to bring the community together and build a neighbourhood spirit.”

The party is being held on the same weekend celebrations are held in London to honour the Queen.

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on June 10 followed by Trooping the Colour on June 11 and culminating in The Patron’s Lunch in The Mall as the celebratory finale on Sunday June 12. The Queen celebrated her actual birthday on April 21 while an official birthday is also held in June.
