THERE was a mountainous challenge for a group of students as they headed off to South Wales.

Wey Valley students travelled to Bike Park Afan in South Wales to take on a weekend of exciting and challenging mountain biking.

It is an annual trip and sees the students try and tackle some of the best mountain biking trails in Europe.

They were accompanied by PE teacher and outdoor lead Mark Salmon.

The trip is also a chance for some students to be assessed for their GCSE PE studies.

On the Friday the students had to chance to warm up in the skills park before Saturday saw them take on a long five hour ride on an 18 mile trail called W2.

The Sunday saw the students taken on the Wall route with all the technical trails involving jumps, berms, rocks and puddles.

Mr Salmon was impressed with the group.

He said: “Despite some falls and fatigue, all the students showed great perseverance to continue throughout the three day gruelling schedule.

“Two students, Scott Stallman and Sam Anstey have been coming to South Wales since Year 7 and are now quicker and more proficient than the staff which made us feel very proud.”

Mr Salmon thanked Richard Edgeley and Neil Anstey for their support on the trip.

The next mountain biking morning out will be on Saturday, January 14 2017 for students and parents when they will be riding to Hardy’s Monument.
