Organisers of a sell-out music event came together to make a generous donation to Weldmar.

The Boys are Back in Town reunion gig was held at Weymouth Centenary Club at the end of September and saw bands from the 1960s and 1970s reunite to raise money for the local charity.

The event raised more than £2,600 for Weldmar Hospicecare, and will help the charity to continue to provide end of life care for people living in Dorset.

On the bill at the gig included Blind Harvest, Crescendoes, Violin Shoppe/Abacus, Package Deal, Conquerors/Crystal Ship and Brahms & Liszt.

The idea to hold the event was born from nostalgic conversations between old friends Simon Breakspear, Chris Dean and Phil McDonnell, and the gig sold out long before the event date with more than 300 tickets sold.

Mr Breakspear, said: “It was a one in a million evening.

“It went so well, and all the bands played really well.

“The venue was full up from six o’clock until the end.

“And the fact that we were raising so much money for Weldmar Hospicecare was the icing on the cake.

“I can honestly say it was a total success.

“We’ll be doing it again next year because it went so well”.

Mr Dean, said “We were overjoyed that all 300 tickets sold out so quickly.

“We held a waiting list, and were very thankful when tickets were donated back to us from supporters who could no longer attend”.

Mr Dean also thanked Paul Ward of the Centenary Club for allowing them to use the centenary club.

He said: “Paul would open up the Centenary Club for us whenever we needed in the lead up to the gig, allowing all the bands to rehearse and get used to the space.

“This was really kind of him, as many of the musicians hadn’t seen each other for many, many years.

“But, once they started playing, it was like they’d never lost contact”.

The two organisers were joined by Mr Ward outside the Weymouth Centenary Club to present the cheque to Diane Bentley, Community Engagement Fundraiser of Weldmar.

She welcomed the donation and said: “I was delighted to meet up with some of the guys behind this event – and was overjoyed that they have managed to raise so much for Weldmar.

“It is only with the support of our local community that we can continue to provide our outstanding services across Dorset”.
