Dorset Police have launched an investigation following a boat fire last night (16).

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were alerted to the fire just after 7pm.

A dramatic video taken by Josh Garth, who lives in Weymouth, shows a boat engulfed in flames at the Ferrybridge Marine on Portland Beach Road.

A spokesman for DWFRS said crews from Weymouth were already out on a drill night when they became aware of the fire.

A further crew from Weymouth was then sent to the scene.

The spokesman said: "It was reported to us as a medium-sized boat in a rack.

"Crews extinguished the fire with hose reel jets and a compressed air foam system with the help of breathing apparatus."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said they received the call from DWFRS as there was black smoke going into the road that could have been a hazard to drivers.

A road closure was put in place from Ferrybridge until the Chesil Beach Centre.

The road reopened at about 8pm.

The spokesman said the fire is believed to be suspicious and enquiries are ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
